Northern Noir is a theatrical show exploring Femininity, Masculinity and Blackness through spoken word, dance, film and live music. Through five acts Northern Noir challenges societal conditioning, connects with one’s history and unpacks the status quo. It gives the audience an opportunity to dive into a world of equality and liberation within all genders, colour, sexual orientation, ability and age.
Northern Noir is directed by Omari Swanston-Jeffers and created by Maria Dakova, Omari Swanston-Jeffers and Ashley Karrell. During the show, four performers and four musicians take you on a journey through five different spaces: Old Noir, Masculinity, Blackness, Femininity and New Noir.
Beginning at Old Noir, a place of pressures, ‘old truths’ and judgement, they navigate through their world growing with each step they take. Until their journey concludes at Northern Noir, the New Noir. This is the space that we create for ourselves today from the lessons learned in the past and the decisions taken to change and evolve.
