Dr Andrew Cuming, Centre for Plant Sciences, Leeds University dicusses ‘Greening the world – how plants conquered the land’.
How did plants first make the transition from their wet habitats to dry land? How were they able to survive in drier environments? Andrew Cuming will describe how mosses became the first true land plants about 500 million years ago.
He will talk about the adaptations that would have been necessary for plants to survive on land, and about his research into the evolutionary process that changed our planet.
Cafe Sci Leeds was set up to encourage understanding and debate about topical scientific research and issues in an informal setting. Speakers are invited to present a short talk on an area of science in which they have been involved which is then followed by questions and comments.
